Common Boiler Problems & How to Troubleshoot

There are a number of things that can go wrong with your steam boiler, including but not limited to:

NO HEAT COMING FROM RADIATOR

  • Check the water level – steam boilers have a glass window that allow to check the water level. If there is no water, steam cannot be produced to heat the house.
  • Check the low water cut-off valve – not only can operating an empty boiler be harmful for the boiler but it can build up so much pressure that it can cause an explosion. To prevent this, many boilers have a shut-off valve underneath the boiler which turns off the boiler if the water level gets too low. If the boiler’s water level is too low and the valve shuts off, it will need to be reset.
  • Possible thermostat issue – If the thermostat is the culprit, call Cellino Plumbing, Heating & Cooling for repair or replacement.

LOSS OF PRESSURE

  • Check Pressure Gauge – most steam boilers are calibrated to operate at a low pressure. Over time, minerals and dirt in the water can build up and lead to blockages in the piping system. This builds up pressure and can cause the safety valve to shut off just as it would when the water level is too low. If the pressure is too high, the radiator valves need to be cleaned.

PILOT LIGHT IS OUT

  • If the pilot light goes out, it could mean a broken thermocouple, mineral deposit build up, low gas supply, or a draft that has blown out the pilot light.

BANGING OR WHISTLING NOISES

  • If you hear loud banging noises coming from your radiator, there could be water pooling inside the pipe. When a house ages, it can shift leading to pipe to slope at an angle. This can cause water to pool inside the pipe since it cannot drain properly from the radiator into the boiler once it is condensed.
