Make Longer Days = Use Less Water!

daylightsavings

It’s easy to assume that as the days get longer with Daylight Savings Time, you’ll be using more water each day. That’s pretty ironic, considering that the whole point of Daylight Saving is to make the country more eco-friendly.

Using more water just because the day is longer doesn’t necessarily have to be your reality. Higher water use on longer days can cause more wear and tear on your pipes and increase your monthly water bill.

How Much do You Really Know About Daylight Savings?

onehourDaylight Savings Time has only been practiced in the United States since Lyndon Johnson signed a bill putting it into effect in 1966. However, the concept was first presented in 1895 by a scientist in New Zealand.

The German Empire popularized the practice during World War I when they began turning public clocks forward an hour in the spring to reduce the use of artificial light and get more fuel for the war effort.

Several industries are positively impacted by Daylight Savings Time. One of these is the railroad industry, which was instrumental in the decision to implement Daylight Savings, to begin with. Your plumbing can also be affected by Daylight Savings time.

What Are Some Ways You Can Save Water?

There are lots of ways that you can save water, in your own home, every day to help the environment and reduce the effects of high water use on your pipes. Now, we all know that old hippy trick to conserve water, “if it’s yellow let it mellow,” but we know that may not be for everyone. That’s why we’ve come up with a few other tips for you to try:

  1. savewaterTake shorter showers.
  2. Don’t run water while you brush your teeth.
  3. Water your lawn or plants in the evening, so you’ll only have to water them once.
  4. If you’re running water to allow your shower to heat up, place a bucket under the faucet to catch the water. That way you can use it to flush the toilet, rather than throwing it away.
  5. Look into having a low-flow or dual flow toilet installed.

Why is Going Green Important?

goinggreenBeing environmentally conscious, or “going green” is a great way that you can do your part to protect the natural resources that support every kind of life on this planet.

It can also be a really smart decision to make if you’re trying to cut down on utility costs at home. Using less water can make your pipes last longer since it creates less wear and tear.

It can also slow the accumulation of limescale or mineral deposits in your pipes, not to mention saving you tons of money on your water bill. Now that we know a little more about why it’s important to conserve water, and how we can do it, take a moment to think on how much water you use in a day?

How much more would you have used now that the days are getting longer, without thinking about it?
