How a Winter Checklist Can Make a Difference This Season
With the snowy blast of winter not too far off here in Buffalo, NY, it is prudent for you to take on some last minute home maintenance, even your plumbing system. There are certain tasks that you need to complete to be sure that your family and your house will remain warm, safe and dry all winter long.
Here are some helpful hints about what needs to be on your checklist.
Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Testing
You should be in the habit of testing your carbon monoxide and smoke alarms twice a year, but it is especially important that you get to this before the fall officially ends.
When you turn the furnace on and start using the fireplace more often, the chance of fire and carbon monoxide poisoning increases. That’s why working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are essential.
Test that they function properly. Replace batteries. Remove the lids and vacuum out the inside because dust and debris gather over the season, which can interfere with its ability to work well. Never paint over the unit, because it will block the sensors.
Stock up on De-Icing Salt
It doesn’t have to be overly cold for your walkways and driveway to ice over. This can be extremely hazardous.
Reduce the risk of injury by spreading a generous layer of de-icing salt. Stock up now before the snow and ice storms start.
It is a good idea to keep some in the trunk of your car as well, in case your locks get frozen. Be careful if you have pets, as some de-icers can be toxic.
Choose something more organic if that is a concern. You can also use sand or rock salt to do the same job if you prefer.
Insulate for Warmth
To keep your home warm this winter, it is essential that your home is well-insulated. As heat rises, it is particularly important that your attic is airtight; the exterior walls matter as well.
You suffer the bulk of heat loss out of your walls, as opposed to your windows and doors. How do you know if your insulation is insufficient?
If you’ve got ice dams, frozen pipes, fluctuating temperatures inside, cold spots to the touch and high heating bills, there is a good chance you need to bulk up the insulation.
Ventilation is Important Too
It’s also important to make sure that your home is dry this winter because if it is too damp, it won’t heat properly. Make sure that you’ve got exhaust fans that will vent to the outdoors. Move furniture away from the walls in the basement, so that moisture doesn’t get trapped there.
